Showroom or service area? Setting up Google for a cabinet shop

How to pick your Google profile setup, category and photos, and what to write so people and AI tools understand what your shop builds.

By New Reward 6 min read

Some cabinet shops have a showroom with open hours. Others build in a shop that clients never visit, and do design visits in the client’s home. Google treats those two setups differently, and getting it right is the first step to showing up.

Step 1: Pick the right setup

You have a showroom clients visit during posted hours. List your address and your showroom hours. Google’s guidelines say a profile can show a physical location that customers can visit.

Clients never come to your shop. You are what Google calls a service-area business. Google’s guidelines say:

  • Hide your address from customers.
  • Keep your service area within about two hours of driving from where you are based.

You do both? If clients can visit a showroom during set hours, you can show the address and hours and also set the areas you install in.

Step 2: Choose a specific category

Google says to choose a primary category that best describes your business, and to be specific. Its own example: instead of “Salon,” choose “Nail salon.” It also says not to pick a category for every product or service. Use a few categories that describe the business as a whole.

So choose the most specific category for your main work, add only a few others that truly fit, and list your products, like kitchen cabinets, vanities and built-ins, as services.

Step 3: Fill your profile with real work

Google’s tips for local ranking include verifying your business, keeping your information complete and current, replying to reviews and adding photos and videos. For a cabinet shop, photos do most of the selling.

  • Upload finished projects every month, labeled by room.
  • Add a few shop photos: your team, your tools, work in progress.
  • Keep your hours current, including holiday closures.

Google’s help pages add that a better local ranking can’t be bought. Your profile work is what moves it.

Step 4: Write facts AI tools can repeat

Google says there are no special requirements to appear in its AI Overviews and AI Mode. It says you don’t need new machine-readable files or special markup. The same basics count: pages it can read and accurate business information.

So on your website, say these things in plain words:

  • What you build: custom kitchens, vanities, built-ins, closets
  • What you build with: the woods and finishes you work in
  • How it works: design visit, drawings, build, install
  • How long it takes: a typical range from deposit to install
  • Where you work: the towns and counties, by name

Step 5: Make timelines easy to see

Buyers are cautious right now. In the NKBA’s second-quarter 2026 Kitchen & Bath Market Index, 49% of 500 surveyed kitchen and bath pros named consumer uncertainty as the top limit on growth, and 42% named rising material costs.

You can’t fix the economy. You can make the first step easy. A clear process page with real time ranges helps a careful buyer plan, and it gives them a reason to call you first.

Your checklist

  • Profile set up as a showroom or a service-area business, matching how you work
  • Address hidden if clients never visit
  • One specific primary category, plus only a few others
  • Products listed as services
  • New project photos added every month
  • Website says what you build, with what, how, how long and where
